Katrina oil spill was 8 million gallons?

Admiral Thad Allen, the coordinator of the Hurricane Katrina response, talks about the oil spill. At about 13:00 he discusses comparative spills (Exxon Valdez was 11 million gallons) and talks about the cumulative oil spill during the 2005 storm being 8 million gallons. Does anyone recall seeing this quantity associated with the storms? That is a gawd-awful huge amount…that is about to be eclipsed if BP doesn’t snuff this thing out soon.

  1. Yes. Actually, it was closer to 9 million. There was eight million spilled from on-shore oil facilities, and over 700,000 gallons spilled throughout the offshore facilities/pipes… etc.
