I was down and out sick as a dog this past weekend and still recovering now – C was kind enough to tend to me through the mess and we wound up hibernating all weekend. Unfortunately he was unable to check on his place, and discovered this morning that he was robbed.
Some industrious thief peeled back his fence planks and stole his bicycle and some of his bike parts and a few tools. It wasn’t so much the stuff, but the underlying point of it all – that someone who lost everything in the storm and scraped since then to collect a tiny few precious pieces of worth, including one of his modes of transportation, was ripped off. Bald faced, I’m-gonna-rip-out-your-fence and steal-your-shit kinda ripped off. Someone mentioned calling the police, and he laughed at the absurdity, calling the NOPD for a fucking stolen bicycle?
Because of that, the For Sale sign went up today. I was hoping he could stick it out, see if the city would turn around after the election next May, see if the neighborhood would get better as the blight continues to be bulldozed into empty lots, maybe open a business on the property since it is in a prime location, but there is only so much one can take – and unfortunately the fight was lost, he lost the fight inside him and the city won…
